1. Thermostat Set Incorrectly

It sounds simple, but the thermostat is often the first place to check. Your thermostat may have been bumped, or someone else in the house could have changed the settings.

• Make sure your thermostat is set to COOL rather than HEAT.
• Check the fan setting. If it is set to ON, the fan will blow air continuously even when the AC compressor isn’t actively cooling. Switch the fan setting to AUTO, so it only blows air when the system is actively lowering the temperature.

2. Dirty Air Filter

A clogged air filter is one of the most common reasons an air conditioner stops working efficiently. When a filter is packed with dust, pet dander, and debris, it restricts airflow through the system. This can cause the indoor evaporator coils to freeze over, turning your cooling system into a block of ice and sending warm air through your vents. Check your furnace or air handler filter. If it looks grey or covered in dust, replace it immediately. We recommend checking your filters every month during the peak summer cooling season and changing them as needed. 3. Outdoor Condenser Unit Is Blocked or Dirty

Your air conditioning system relies on two main parts: the indoor unit and the outdoor condenser unit. The outdoor unit is responsible for releasing the heat collected from inside your home out into the open air. If the unit is covered or blocked by dirt, lawn clippings, cottonwood seeds, or overgrown brush, it cannot effectively release that heat.

Clear away any weeds, bushes, or debris within a two-foot radius of your outdoor unit. If the metal fins look caked with dirt or cottonwood, a gentle rinse with a garden hose can help clear the blockage.

4. Tripped Breaker or Loss of Power

Sometimes, the indoor fan is working fine, but the outdoor unit has completely lost power. If the indoor unit is running, it will circulate room-temperature air through your house, making it feel like the AC is blowing warm air.

Check your home's main electrical panel. Look for the circuit breaker labeled for the air conditioner or outdoor unit. If it has tripped to the "off" position, flip it back on.

Note: If the breaker immediately trips again, do not keep resetting it. This indicates an electrical issue that requires a professional HVAC technician.

5. Low or Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the liquid chemical that absorbs the heat from your indoor air and carries it outside. If your system is low on refrigerant, it cannot absorb enough heat to cool down the air. Air conditioners do not "consume" refrigerant; if it is low, it means you have a leak in the lines.

Along with warm air, you might notice a hissing or bubbling sound near the AC lines, or ice building up on the outdoor refrigerant line. This is not a DIY fix. Refrigerant requires specialized tools and certifications for safe handling. You will need a licensed technician to locate the leak, repair it, and recharge the system.
